The Poetic Edda by Anonymous5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Among the many available editions of Tolkien's epic is. It is a fascinating collection of poems that has stirred the imagination of artists such as Richard Wagner and Thomas Gray, and it will continue to inspire as it stands as a valuable and informative historical document and an entertaining set of stories of Norse mythology. Tolkien's sources for his story include the Poetic Edda and the legend of Siegfried the dragonslayer. Rediscovered in the seventeenth century and immediately celebrated for its broad portrait of northern pagan beliefs, "The Poetic Edda" is the most important source of Norse mythology and Germanic heroic legends in existence today. This body of poetry contains narratives on creation, the Doom of the Gods, the adventures of Thor and hostile giants, and many tales of love, family, heroes, and tragedy. ![]() It was preserved for hundreds of years in the medieval Codex Regius of Iceland. First passed down orally through innumerable generations of minstrels before the presence of Christianity in Scandinavia, and written down eventually by unknown poets, "The Poetic Edda" is a collection of mythological and heroic Old Norse poems. ![]()

Renee ahdieh the damned5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() but none of it had much depth.Īlso, the first 150 pages of this book were a struggle because they consist of moving through different POVs and talking about what they want but can’t have and what they don’t remember and mysterious dark plans that they can’t tell you about *evil laugh* Nothing actually happens, though. There is so much wishy washy paranormal info about vampires, werewolves, enchantresses, ethereals. I mean, when the makeouts did happen, it was deliciously steamy, but the problem is that The Damned tries to get bigger and wilder with the plot and the result is an odd mishmash of mythologies and supernatural creatures. With this book, I really just wanted some Bastien/Celine smut, lol. ![]() But the world itself was quite weak, the setting felt nothing like 1872, and the whole supernatural politics aspect was not interesting to me. ![]() It was a bit of mindless entertainment and I'm a sucker (ha, pun!) for sexy vampires, let's be honest. To be fair, I thought The Beautiful was only okay. Sadly, this sequel is like The Beautiful but with nowhere near enough sexy vampness to keep it thrilling. ![]()

Vagabond vizbig 1 125/21/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() There are two ways to collect Vagabond currently with English translation, the individual volumes, which are now out of print, and the Vagabond Vizbig Editions. Also, as far as samurai stories go, it’s one of the most unique, relatable, and engrossing I’ve ever read. Vagabond is a story based on the real-life swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, but while it has roots in history, it feels like this larger than life tale as mentioned prior. The people he meets along the way add so much to this story too and they not only affect us but Musashi as well. Because of his brutish and violent ways, a lot of people think he’s something like a demon, but we as the reader, know he’s so much more than that and we really see him develop and grow over the course of the volumes. If you are new to Vagabond, the story follows Miyamoto Musashi on his journey to become the greatest swordsman. For these reasons and more, it is my second favorite seinen manga of all-time right behind Berserk by the one and only Kentaro Miura. Not only that, but the series has a strong cast of characters that grow and develop in a way that's not just relatable but interesting as well. Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue, who is also the creator of Slam Dunk and Real, features realistic art and a story that, while rooted in history, feels larger-than-life. ![]()

Hood feminism book cover5/20/2023 ![]() Kind of like…the Declaration of Independence’s “all men are created equal.” Critiquing White FeminismĪccording to Merriam Webster, the word feminism is defined as: “belief in and advocacy of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes expressed especially through organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests.” I’ll be honest, reading this definition and thinking about the feminist movement today, this definition can ring a little hollow. When I do read about it, I choose to read Black Women’s perspectives about it for the reasons Kendall brings up in her book. Because, I’m going to be straight, feminism isn’t a topic that I read a lot about. ![]() It would not have been in my normal TBR list, but I am glad that I stretched and read it. ![]() I saw Hood Feminism: Notes From the Women That a Movement Forgot by Mikki Kendall pop up on Bookstagram a lot in March. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Can you please tell me your publishing story. The Dark Beneath the Ice is a story about ghosts and things that go bump in the night. As soon as it arrived at Chapters, I tracked it down to see it in the wild for myself, and fortunately nobody paid any attention to the weird lady tearing up and taking selfies in the teen fiction section. Thanks so much! Having it out there in the world is the very best kind of thrill and also deeply surreal – I’ve wanted to write books since I was five years old, so it’s literally a lifelong dream come true. ![]() How exciting is it to see your name on a book? Have you discovered on store shelves yet? What was your reaction? Thank you so much for agreeing to speak with me and congratulations on your first book The Dark Beneath The Ice ($24.99, Raincoast Books, Sourcebooks Fire). ![]()

![]() Comyns‘s wit doesn’t promote the blessings of being English, but the blessings of being able to laugh about being English. Not many reasons to be cheerful in 1954.īut such conditions are soil for the growth of English wit, dry as both the soil and the wit may be. The Mau Mau were rising up, Suez was preparing to boil over, the IRA started acting bolshy in Armagh, and Alan Turing poisoned himself rather than go to prison for homosexuality. Sociologically the pre-war world of fixed class, unchallenged privilege, and institutional isolation was gone.
